Summer of Service: Week 3

This week we started incorporating tutoring into the summer program at the Boys and Girls Club. I have been helping out with english and reading. The club has ten or so copies of books like Anne of Green Gables, Call of the Wild, Little Women, Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn.
The kids are supposed to spend an entire hour, but they’d much rather be doing
anything but that. They’d rather be

They can barely stay still for five minutes let alone an entire hour. So one of the things the staff member and I have been contemplating various solutions to our problem. They are:
1. Have the kids read out loud
2. Find other more interesting things for the kids to read (like plays)
3. Allow the kids to read out loud in groups of their choosing
4. Have the kids explain what they read to us
5. Take turns reading with the kids
6. Have a reward system and award kids who read the most

Later this past week I tried letting the kids read in groups of their own choosing. I had them all sit “criss-cross applesauce” on the floor. This helped to remove some of the distractions that the toys on the table and chairs provided. Most of kids seemed to enjoy reading in groups. There was one large group of about 8 kids that managed to get through an entire book by taking turns reading out loud. The remaining kids were mostly assembled in individual groups and I took turns reading with them which was something that they all seemed to enjoy.
The only real trouble I had was with one group of 3 girls. They kept trying to hide under the tables so that they would not have to read. After about 45 minutes of me pestering them to read either together or quietly they finally succumed to the pressure and decided to spend the remaining 15 minutes reading. Hopefully this success will continue, but I’ll probably have to change things up a bit because the limited book options are sure to get boring after a bit.
