It feels very, very good to be done with the first week of camp. It was incredibly fun and there's so much to talk about, but it was just super duper exhausting and it's so nice to have one week under my belt. Ok, catching my breath....Here we go!
So we have about 37 kids signed up in total for summer camp, but only 25 came on the first day, which was a nice way to start out small and learn names and such! My precious little group, the BLUE BARRICUDAS, consists of Camari, Majestic, Danny, James, Kit Kat, and Tray'van! And let me tell you, as much as I love these kids already, some of them are just bad children. All children are innocent, but the disobedience and uncooperative nature of both James and Tray'van often makes me forget how small and fragile they are. I just want to pick them up and put them where they are supposed to be because otherwise I'm just trying to encourage them to listen whilst they run off into the woods. RGGGGG >:( But that's the only downside! Other than those two kids being little troublemakers and both being in my group, everything else about camp is amazing!
I've already learned almost all of the names throughout the bus rides back and forth from the camp, morning rally, activity sessions, lunch, cooldown time and going to the pool! Every Tuesday and Thursday we leave the camp early to go to a local pool near the Boys and Girls Club and it is a very nice pool. Plus, many of the kids are just learning how to swim, so my being able to cruise around underwater and swim around easily makes me seem godlike. Sadly though, a big storm on Wednesday night closed the pool down on Thursday, so we went to a big sprinkler park instead!
While at the camp, I work with Sarah to run the arts and crafts! And although we may not get as much immediate excitement as sports, hiking or fishing, the kids we do get really seem to love it and attract more kids! If other counselors finish their activities early, many kids will want to come in and spend the rest of their time finding and personalizing their very own walking sticks! They also loved going into the woods to find big rocks and leaves to paint on! Majestic in particular will work non-stop the entire time, moving immediately from one work of art to the next and always has more stuff to beautify!
I just love everything about the camp! We had only perfect weather days all week and the staff is so much fun to work with and the kids are all adorable and unique and I genuinely enjoy getting up to do my service every single day. I can only hope that things continue to be as enjoyable as they are for the last three weeks I have here in Albany!
