Week 2 - Still Getting Adjusted

6am just seems to come faster and faster. Anyway I've gotten somewhat adjusted to the routine again but dealing with the changed dynamics of the classrooms is still difficult. The 1 new student in one of the kindergarten classes is autistic and mainly just likes to roll around on the floor (no exaggeration) and distract the other kids. I actually got him to read 2 books to me before he went back to rolling on the floor so I'm making progress. His IQ is too high for full-time services so he only receives part-time services. The issue is that the lady barely shows up to help him and when she does it's only for 30 minutes. He needs 1 on 1 attention and the teacher cannot give that to him. The other kindergarten class is going well. The kids keep telling me how much they missed me and are glad that I am back. But this first grade class...I tell ya. There are 25 students and 5 of them are separated from the rest of the group. Each of these 5 students sits by himself in a corner of the classroom and each of these 5 students still manage to get into trouble. It's great to see that a lot of the students have made progress but it's sad that some of them haven't made any. The teacher has this thing called "Swiss Cheese Sight Words" and all the sight words for the week are placed on a metal clip. I call them back to read the words and if they read the word without any hesitation then I hole punch it. When they get 10 hole punches, they get to use it as classroom money. Now there are 2 weeks left of school and some students still don't know the words from the second month of school. I can really tell who practices at home and who does not. Well...that's all for now.
