I cannot
believe that I’m already halfway through my Summer of Service! I only have two
more weeks with HUM. But at least I have the rest of the summer with PAL!
This
week at HUM has been similar to the last few. That is, I’ve been working with
my fellow student volunteer in the food pantry. This week is her last week though, so
I will probably have to take on some more responsibility in my last two weeks.
One of
the cool projects I worked on this week was creating a spreadsheet with the
contact information of all the HUM volunteers. Even though this did not take me
very long at all, I feel good about having done it; I think it will really help
the organization in the long-run. I honestly think that this was a project that
most of the volunteers at HUM would not be able to do properly – even the
volunteer coordinator is not proficient in Excel. So it’s cool that the
responsibility was given to me.
As for
PAL, this week has been pretty easy. I am officially over the paperwork
mountain. Now it’s just running practices; that is, until games start in a
couple of weeks.
One of
the things that I have learned about myself while working at PAL is that I do
not dislike kids as much as I had thought! In fact, the people who have given
me and the staff the most trouble are the parents. But, the middle school kids
are definitely super annoying and some of the younger and older kids are just
punks, as I like to call them… I truly prefer working with prisoners and the
homeless.
