Just a heads up about my posts - I'm actually almost finished at one of my sites so all of my posts actually occurred weeks ago. Anyway...
This summer I am working at two service sites
simultaneously: Halifax Urban Ministries (HUM) and the Port Orange Police
Athletic League (PAL). At HUM most of my responsibilities center around the
day-to-day activities of the food pantry, conducting client intake and
distributing food, which is very similar to what I do at
the NHC. I have also worked on two marketing projects – a United Way
phone campaign and a project that involved contacting local food banks. These
projects gave me some real-world experience in a non-profit office setting.
With a week and a half under my belt, I’ve already learned
so much and have increased my role at HUM. The volunteer coordinator even
refers to me and my fellow student volunteer as the “Dynamic Duo.” It has been
great being able to continue my service in the issue area of homelessness in my
home community. I am so excited to spend the next few weeks serving and
learning at HUM.
My work with PAL is extremely different from my service at
HUM. With PAL I have essentially become the assistant coordinator of the summer
basketball league. I've done tons of data entry, scheduling, etc. I had
honestly never realized how much work goes into PAL before the basketball can
even begin. Having played in the PAL league as a kid, it’s awesome to be able
to come back and help run the program that has given me and my family so much.
Doing all of the paper work and spreadsheets has definitely taught me a lot of
marketable, real-world skills, but I am so ready for the basketball!
Talk to you all later!
Way to go Taylor!
